Untitled Family Archive: Great Grand-Ma Eunice, Letter to Great Grand-Ma Eunice

It is a letter of permission directed to my late great-grandmother as a gesture toward connection. Employing text and personal archive, the work explores separation, connection, and the transfer of legacy. My late great-grandmother was a musician in her time and the only other identifying artist in my family; knowing this, I have begun the work of tracing our creative connections while honouring her legacy by revitalizing her practice and bringing it into more contemporary times. This work features vinyl records of her music and vinyl blanks I made and then a letter written in both in my native language and English. She spoke and sang in Okrika, my native language, a language now lost to me, so for me this letter in both a signal longing and a sign of respect of our creative pursuits.
